T13: Data Governance for Successful Data Quality
Malcolm Chisholm, President, AskGet

Data Quality is a primary practice area of Data Governance, but very often Data Governance fails to address it well.  This tutorial describes what Data Governance needs to do to establish a successful Data Quality program in an enterprise.  The first step is to determine the boundaries of Data Quality, especially with respect to Data Issue Management and Data Change Management.   After this, the approaches of Data Quality projects versus continuous Data Quality monitoring are contrasted.  The use of profiling for Data Quality is examined, and the governance of Data Quality Business Rules is explored in detail.   Additionally, the need for governance over the metadata involved in Data Quality, and how this is factored into repositories is described.  Issue management is a necessary part of Data Quality, and has extensive governance requirements that are described.  The integration of change management with Data Quality is also covered.  Roles and responsibilities can be a difficult area in Data Quality as short-cuts in data management in one part of the enterprise can cause problems for other areas.  This aspect of governance is also dealt with.  Traditional issues in Data Quality, such as what the dimensions of Data Quality really mean, are also discussed.

Attendees will learn:
  • How Data Governance can set the scope of Data Quality
  • How different approaches to Data Quality must be
  • Governance of Issue and Change Management
  • How Data Governance is modernizing Data Quality practices
