Implementing Metadata Management Best Practices
Anne Marie Smith
Alabama Yankee Systems
The growing use of data by every type of organization coupled with the
disparate sources of that data has made metadata management increasingly
important, and the lack of understanding of principles and best practices
in the management of metadata leads to overspending on technical solutions
and under use of valuable data in operations and decision making.
Organizations
collect, generate, store and use large amounts of data that have been
obtained at considerable cost. However, many organizations would be hard
pressed to describe what types of data are available and what characteristics
those data have. Sharing data and relating it to other data is also a
challenge when the organization does not know its metadata" - literally,
"data about data".
This
workshop will provide attendees with a set of principles underlying metadata
of all types, show a method for collecting and storing various forms of
metadata and suggest some best practices for managing this valuable resource.
Attendees
will learn:
*
Purpose
of metadata - why do we need metadata?
* Principles of metadata management - conceptual metadata maturity
* Key roles in metadata implementation - who do we need in metadata management?
* Metadata policy development and usage - practical metadata maturity
The
presentation is based on research and the experiences of the presenter
across several assignments as a manager of data administration and as
a senior consultant to various organizations. As a workshop, attendees
will be encouraged to develop customized versions of the principles, role
descriptions and policies presented, so they can implement these concepts
in their organizations.
