Using Your Metadata Repository to Support Data Quality, Access Management, and eSecurity

Summary
Traditional metadata repositories focus on IT systems and the data they hold. But today's organizations need to understand more. What is the level of quality of that data? How quality is being controlled, and by whom? Is the data at risk? Will it meet compliance requirements? Is it secure? Has access to data been managed to meet operational, security, and compliance needs? Have we assigned closed-loop accountability for the data, or are their holes in our efforts?

It is possible to employ a metadata repository to answer all these questions, and more. In this seminar we start with a traditional conceptual metadata model and work together to extend it to include risk, control strategies, and accountability to support Data Quality, Access Management, and eSecurity. Participants are encouraged to bring their own models to be analyzed. We explore strategies for using the tools you already have in place to turn your metadata program into a key business solution.

Objectives
On workshop completion, participants will be able to:

* Articulate how business metadata can be used to identify and manage risks to the quality and integrity of enterprise data
* Identify metadata that helps predict the impact of system and personnel changes on data-related compliance and controls efforts
* Identify where in the organization this metadata exists, and how to mine it
* Extend a traditional metadata model to show risk, accountability, and Data Quality metrics
* Extend a traditional metadata model to connect Stewardship to Access Management and eSecurity roles and risks
* Describe strategies for aligning metadata and governance efforts
* Describe strategies for deriving benefits from this business metadata, even if it's not possible to extend an existing metadata repository
